Francis says Putin's invasion of Ukraine has strengthened feelings of Ukrainian nationhood: ‘Vladimir Putin is going to be remembered as one of the fathers of the Ukrainian nation.’
On a special episode of The Book Club podcast, Sam Leith, The Spectator's literary editor, is joined by Francis Fukuyama, author of Liberalism and its Discontents.
On the episode, Francis says Putin's invasion of Ukraine has strengthened feelings of Ukrainian nationhood: ‘Vladimir Putin is going to be remembered as one of the fathers of the Ukrainian nation.’
He also says that countries cannot be build around race or religion, or other fixed identity groups: 'In a liberal society, people need to have a source of community and mutual identification, and the nation still remains a pretty strong source of that.
