The UN Refugee Agency, today acknowledged the enormous support of the Polish authorities and civil society for those who have been forced to flee Ukraine, after the number of arrivals passed the two million mark within three weeks.

‘These refugees have lost almost everything. We need to help them. Even if that means we’ll have to learn to live with less,’ says mayor of Medyka, a primary crossing point for refugees.

In just over two weeks, companies, foundations and philanthropists have contributed over US$200 million towards UNHCR’s Ukraine emergency response.

Under leaden skies at the remote Palanca border crossing in southeastern Moldova, groups of refugees from Ukraine brave the bone-chilling wind as they watch their bags and other belongings being loaded onto five waiting buses for the five-hour journey to Huși in Romania.

This is a summary of what was said by UNHCR spokesperson Matthew Saltmarsh – to whom quoted text may be attributed – at today's press briefing at the Palais des Nations in Geneva. UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, has significantly stepped up its assistance in Ukraine and the neighbouring countries receiving refugees in response to acute humanitarian needs as the fighting intensifies.

With nearly 2 million people forcibly displaced within Ukraine, UNHCR and its partners are responding to the dire humanitarian needs with shelter and other forms of aid.

Chisinau, 10 March 2022 – The Moldovan and Romanian Governments, supported by the UN Refugee Agency, UNHCR and the International Organization for Migration, IOM have set in place the transfer of people who fled Ukraine, including third country nationals, from southern Moldova to Romania, a journey of some 230 kilometres. The first convoy departed Palanca Border Crossing Point this morning, transporting 250 refugees to Husi in Romania.
